TERESA CHRISTINE SILAKAN

At the age of 8 and in class 2 Teresa unexpectedly found herself a total orphan. Young as she was she suffered the harshness of untamed death of her parents in years 2000 and 2001 consecutively. Teresa is a daughter to the late Mr. and Mrs. Silakan. She was born in 1993 at Doldol town center. It was at that age of 8 that death was so unfair to Teresa by registering her parents into its record. Her previously sweet life turned bitter. Since then frustration, despair, anguish and loss of morale have haunted her.

Teresa has 7 brothers and 3 sisters, 5 of whom attend school. She stays with her aunt, Mary Silakan, who is poor and impoverished to meet the child's basic and educational needs. Lack of enough dietary food, lack of study light and interrupted school attendance faced by Teresa before enrolment into the orphan programme.

Teresa was enrolled into the Leigh Day orphan programme at class 8. She was then a day scholar at Doldol primary school, but immediately on enrolment she started boarding in the same school. The girl has a hearing problem which at times affects her performance in school. Having averagely passed her K.C.P.E. she joined Meru secondary school and she is now in form 2. The current plan is to get her a hearing aid mechanism to improve her performance in school.
