JOHN LORUMAN MAKO

John, an orphan, had run away from hostility he experienced at his guardian's home to live in the wild. Wild fruits were his only food. Life was so tough for him until he started breaking into people's houses for food. The boy looked dirty and was in tatters. Looking at him one could see negligence, hunger, pain, discrimination, despair and hopelessness. Asking him why he had to live away from home, he said he was avoiding the harsh treatment by the guardian. He had been severely beaten, food had been missed and love was far from the guardian's home. To John, life was harsh and the journey of suffering was endless. He desired not to live among men. He thought animals were friendlier than the people he lived with.

Beautiful songs by birds at least gave some comfort. Hearing about it, Peter Kilesi adopted the child. He gave him hope and encouraged him but with great difficulty. It required a patient heart full of love to tame and restore his life into a homely environment. It is at Peter Kilesi home where John was found by the Leigh Day Orphan programme.

John was born at Leruk village near Doldol town. He was a son to the late single mother, Miss Sadiyan Kingekiwat. John is now 13 years old. When we took him back to school he performed very poorly and he had to repeat class 4. John has really improved and he was position 15 out of 81. His dream is to pursue aviation engineering at Oxford University. It's wonderful that he is aware of Oxford University. We have already transferred John to Ilpolei primary school so that he can access computer knowledge as early as now. His hobbies include travelling, camping and watching wild animal's movies.
