SIKEL SAIKONG

Sikel Saikong is 14 years old and in class 5. She and her two sisters are daughters to the late Mzee Saikong and Mrs. Karure Saikong. Mzee Saikong died in 2004 and left the daughters under the care of his wife Karure Saikong. The mother is poor and bearing the needs of the three daughters has proved difficult for her. Talking to Sikel, this is what she had to say, " We miss the days when dad was alive, Life was not as tough as it is today. Mama is unable to educate us and my dream in education is likely not to be realized due to financial difficulties. My performance is affected by poor school attendance and hunger. I am always unable to finish my homework on time as they is no paraffin for study light."

Yes, it is true. Life has been very tough to Sikel before her enrolment in Leigh Day orphan programme. She was enrolled in the year 2006. She was then in class 2. Her performance was above average even with such interruptions in her school attendance. Sikel has shown an upward trend since we took her to boarding school. She has shown great improvement, which has been very encouraging. Sikel's ambition is to become a bank accountant. She likes mathematics and English. Her hobbies include playing netball and reading business related magazines.
