HAWO ALI MOHAMMED
Hawo was born in 1991 at Doldol town center. She is a daughter to the late Mr. Ali Mohamed and the late Mrs. Sulekha Ali who died in 1990 and 1998 respectively. She was the only daughter but has two brothers. Since the death of her mother, Hawo was adopted by her aunt who acted as a guardian but with much difficulty because she, Aunt Halimo Mohammed, is old and extremely poor. The poor Hawo lived to experience the severity of extreme poverty and the roughness associated with loss of parents. The aunt had her children to care for and adoption of this extra child added to the weight on her shoulders.
We learnt about Hawo from the neighbours who sympathized with her situation. Talking to the young girl and her aunt themselves, one could see her desperate need for help. Yes, one could see her desperate need for education, her despair, frustration, anguish, humiliation, shame and stigma.
Hawo was enrolled into the HOME trust orphan programme in2006 at class 7. The trust took her to Doldol primary boarding school for class 7 and 8. Though previously a poor performer, she with time improved and scored highly 280 marks in 2007 K.C.P.E., thus getting herself a place in a government provincial girl's school-St. Francis Girls High School. She is now in form 2. Her life has changed and she is no longer desperate. Hawo is now happy enjoying the kind and generous support accorded her by Leigh Day and CO. through HOME trust. She now dreams of becoming a sociologist and transforming her family. With the educational, spiritual and counselling support we give her, added to her determination, we believe she will make it.
